Enlisted in the Army for Artillery OCS in June of 1967. After advance infantry training was transferred to the 4th Battalion, 41st Field Artillery (Pershing Missle) in Schwaebisch Gmuend, Germany. Held various assignments in S-2 (Intelligence) and S-3 (Operations) and was selected as Battalion "Soldier of the Month” and "Soldier of the Quarter”. Was promoted to E-5 and awarded the "Pershing Professional Badge”. In June of 1969 was transferred to Vietnam and stationed with the1st Battalion, 61st Infantry at Fire Base Charlie 2 in Con Thien, "I” Corp as NCOIC of Battalion S-3 and attached to the Third Marine Division for operational control. Promoted to E-6 awarded the Army Commendation Medal and the Bronze Star. Released from active duty June 1970. Member of VFW Post 8371 since 2018. Served as post Chaplain prior to becoming post Junior Vice Commander.
