Mike Schraufnagel
Commander - Army

My wife, Betty, and I have been married for over 54 years. We have two children: Chris,
who sadly passed away in 2022 at 48, and Kelly, who is married, lives in Hillsborough,
and works for Merck. Her husband, Keith, works for Verizon. We have two grandsons,
aged 19 and 16, who, along with Betty, are my primary focus.

I was drafted into the US Army in March 1970 at Ft. Campbell, KY, enlisted in the
Regular Army (RA) in April 1970, and graduated from basic training in May 1970. I was
assigned to Ft. Monmouth, NJ, for Fixed Crypto Repair (32F20) school from June 1970
to August 1971. After graduation, I was stationed at StratCom Europe, supporting the
7th Army and NATO in Heidelberg, Germany, until March 1973. During this period, I
held a Top-Secret clearance and had access to Special Intelligence (which sounds like an
oxymoron) because of my work on US Army secure voice equipment assigned to NATO
officials and generals. I ETS’d out of Ft. Dix at the rank of SP5. I joined Hillsborough
Memorial VFW Post #8371 in March 2019 and served as Adjutant until I was recently
elected Commander.

We attend baseball games with my grandsons and play golf whenever the opportunity
presents itself. We enjoy traveling, dining out, and sipping good scotch, but the priority
of these activities constantly shifts.
